The Night Witches
by Rachel Bublitz
DeWitt Studio Theatre
Nina and Vera have finished their training as navigators and will fly their first combat mission against the Nazis tonight. The Russian women of the all female, 588th Night Bomber Regiment, welcome the newbies to the front and help prepare them for what鈥檚 ahead. However, their enemy has a new tactic up their sleeves that will take everyone by surprise. Nicknamed the 鈥渘ight witches鈥 by the Germans, the women flew in planes made of canvas and wood, dropping bombs on the Germans every fifteen minutes through the night to keep their enemy from sleeping. Using movement, song and poetic dialogue, The Night Witches celebrates women鈥檚 courageous military service during World War II and beyond.
